Nature-based solutions (NBS) refer to the use of natural systems or processes to address environmental challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity. These solutions can range from restoring degraded landscapes, protecting and conserving natural habitats, and integrating green infrastructure into urban areas.
There is a growing need for nature-based solutions as traditional approaches to addressing environmental challenges have often been ineffective or have caused unintended consequences. For example, building seawalls to protect coastal cities from rising sea levels can negatively impact nearby ecosystems and fisheries. Nature-based solutions can offer multiple benefits, beyond just environmental protection. For example, they can provide recreational opportunities, improve human health and well-being, and support economic growth through ecotourism and sustainable agriculture.
In addition, nature-based solutions can also help to build resilience to climate change and natural disasters. By restoring natural habitats and ecosystems, communities can better withstand the impacts of extreme weather events and flooding. Ultimately, nature-based solutions can provide a cost-effective and sustainable way to address environmental challenges while also providing a range of co-benefits to society. By working with nature, we can create a more resilient and sustainable future for ourselves and for the planet.
